Most students will take the exam online, though some students will take a paper and pencil version of the writing exam.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At Miami&#8217;s iPrep Academy, getting ready for the state&#8217;s new standardized test includes rapping.<\/p>\n<p>Two students are recording the daily announcements, telling classmates when and where they need to be starting today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Monday is ninth graders, with last name A to G,&#8221; one student raps, in a rhyme that&#8217;s no threat to Miami&#8217;s Rick Ross.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On Tuesday, it\u2019s ninth graders with last name H through Z,&#8221; his partner continues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All testing is in room 2 &#8211; 0 &#8211; 4!&#8221; they conclude together, Beastie Boys-style.<\/p>\n<p>Today marks the start of testing season for Florida schools. Students have state exams scheduled every few weeks from now until the end of the school year.\u2028\u2028It\u2019s the first time students will <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/11\/24\/meet-floridas-new-statewide-test\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/11\/24\/meet-floridas-new-statewide-test\/\">take a new test called the Florida Standards Assessments, or FSA<\/a>, which replaces most FCAT exams.<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/timeline\/latest\/embed\/index.html?source=0AihaTZbo2mqVdFBOOHpMaGl4REVlU2RGY1RlZ2F1Y3c&amp;font=Bevan-PotanoSans&amp;maptype=toner&amp;lang=en&amp;height=650\" height=\"650\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s part of Florida\u2019s new math and language arts standards based on Common Core.<\/p>\n<p>Some grades just started using the standards this year. And Florida chose its replacement for the FCAT about a year ago. So, I know it will be easy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not every student feels as ready as Romero.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a warm day and freshman Beatriz Magalhaes is hanging out with her friends on the lawn near Pembroke Pines Charter High School.\u2028\u2028 She says she\u2019s looked at practice exams posted online and can\u2019t figure out how to answer some of the new types of questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really difficult. I didn\u2019t understand at all what they were asking,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I know is it\u2019s going to be completely different and I am not prepared whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the old days, students would choose a single correct answer from four or five choices.\u2028\u2028 But a new generation of online tests like Florida\u2019s are asking different questions.<\/p>\n<p>There might be two, three or more correct answers \u2013 and students have to choose all of them. Miss one and you get the entire question wrong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/11\/25\/your-guide-to-the-florida-standards-assessments\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/11\/25\/your-guide-to-the-florida-standards-assessments\/\">Other questions might ask students to arrange fractions on a number line, drag items into a box or pick the correct answer from a drop-down menu.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pembroke Pines Charter students say they\u2019ve been so busy working through lessons &#8212; they haven\u2019t talked much about how to take the new test.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Daniel Garcia says based on practice tests, he thinks the new exam is harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took that first thing, and\u2026 I\u2019ve been in the gifted program a long time now,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And I think I got a low C on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The score was a shock, he says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23346\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 738px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"This chart compares testing time, in minutes, by grade for the FCAT and the new Florida Standards Assessments.\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-27-TestingTimeUpdated.png\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23346\" alt=\"This chart compares testing time, in minutes, by grade for the FCAT and the new Florida Standards Assessments.\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-27-TestingTimeUpdated.png\" width=\"738\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-27-TestingTimeUpdated.png 738w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-27-TestingTimeUpdated-300x119.png 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2015\/02\/2-27-TestingTimeUpdated-620x247.png 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">John O&#39;Connor \/ StateImpact Florida<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This chart compares testing time, in minutes, by grade for the FCAT and the new Florida Standards Assessments.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students in middle and elementary school also say lessons have felt rushed &#8212; in order to get through everything that will be on the tests in time.<\/p>\n<p>After taking a trial exam, fifth grader Natasha Benzadon is worried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t write very quickly and they\u2019re giving you a limited time,&#8221; she says, &#8220;for this huge test that\u2019s like really, really hard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t finish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this isn\u2019t usually how tests go for Benzadon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have been so easy for me,&#8221; she says. &#8220;And I\u2019ve always gotten good scores on them, but I\u2019m not so sure about this test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But eighth grader Miikiah Stubbs trusts the teachers at <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/10\/06\/why-a-miami-middle-school-is-teaching-debate-to-conquer-common-core\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2014\/10\/06\/why-a-miami-middle-school-is-teaching-debate-to-conquer-common-core\/\">Miami\u2019s Allapattah Middle School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m expecting it to not be so hard because the way my teacher teaches,&#8221; Stubbs says, &#8220;she drills it into your brain so you\u2019ll really get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How these kids do on all these new tests will help determine how public schools do on their report cards.
