Southern Poverty Law Center<\/p>

Five students are leading a class action lawsuit over college tuition with the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center<\/p><\/div>\n

Below is the lawsuit<\/a> from the Southern Poverty Law Center challenging Florida’s college tuition rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The group argues that children of undocumented immigrants should not be charged out-of-state tuition despite those students being both U.S. citizens and Florida residents.<\/p>\n

StateImpact Florida profiled<\/a> one such student in August.<\/p>\n

From Sarah Gonzalez’<\/a> piece:<\/p>\n

One class at Miami Dade College<\/a> costs $315 for in-state students. Its $950 for out-of-state students. That\u2019s three times more expensive because Caroline\u2019s dad is not a legal Florida resident. And in Florida, college tuition is based on a parent\u2019s residency for unmarried students under age\u00a025.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m a citizen, I\u2019m a resident, I was born here. I\u2019ve been going to Miami-Dade schools my entire life and now all of a sudden I\u2019m considered out-of-state.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I don\u2019t think that\u2019s fair, it\u2019s not my father going to school it\u2019s me. Now I have to I have to claim myself as an independent, work for a year and make more than $11,000 to get the scholarship and start school.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
