While incumbents largely survived along Florida&#39;s Gulf Coast.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Voters turned out two leaders of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsba.org\/\">Florida School Boards Association<\/a> in campaigns contested on school choice and Florida&#8217;s new math and language arts standards. But incumbents mostly won reelection across Florida Tuesday night, or advanced to a November runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Two-term <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpalm.com\/news\/local-news\/indian-river-county\/newcomer-frost-ousts-disneybrombach-on-indian-river-school-board-searcy-takes-2nd-open-seat_46170580\">Indian River school board member Karen Disney-Brombach was defeated by Shawn Frost<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-journalonline.com\/article\/20140827\/NEWS\/140829498\/1040?Title=Volusia-votes-8216-yes-8217-on-school-tax-8216-no-8217-on-board-members\">Volusia County school board member Diane Smith was ousted by Melody Johnson<\/a>. Disney-Brombach is the president of the Florida School Boards Association and Smith was slated to follow her.<\/p>\n<p>The incumbents viewed the races as proxy battles over the school boards association&#8217;s plans to challenge a private school tax scholarship program in court. School choice advocacy group the Federation For Children &#8212; which shares leadership with the non-profit which oversees the tax credit scholarship program &#8212; bought advertising targeting the incumbents in both races.<\/p>\n<p>But on the west coast of Florida, incumbent school board candidates largely won reelection. Sarasota voters rejected two candidates in a race largely shaped by the debate over Florida&#8217;s Common Core-based math and language arts standards. From the <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.heraldtribune.com\/2014\/08\/26\/sarasota-school-board-brown-goodwin-win-runoff-marsh-ziegler\/\"><em>Sarasota Herald-Tribune<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The candidates were divided on Common Core, the national standards that say what students must know in each grade for math and English Language arts.<\/p>\n<p>The state altered them slightly and renamed them \u201cFlorida Standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolff and McLendon \u2014 two Republicans with ties to the Tea Party \u2014 opposed Common Core and said they feared losing local control.<\/p>\n<p>Brown, a Democrat, and Goodwin, a Republican, argued the district was moving in the right direction with Common Core. They supported the standards and said the more challenging standards would better prepare students for life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/k12\/earliest-returns-give-school-board-seats-to-shimberg-snively-and-griffin\/2194765\">three Hillsborough County school board races are heading to a runoff<\/a>, including incumbent April Griffin. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/lerner-and-other-incumbents-likely-to-stay-on-pinellas-school-board\/2194768\">Three Pinellas County school board incumbents won reelection<\/a>, as did a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/k12\/luikart-easily-wins-second-term-on-pasco-school-board\/2194774\">Pasco County board member.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hernando County voters elected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/elections\/three-new-members-guaranteed-on-hernando-school-board\/2194795\">three new members to the school board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Broward County&#8217;s school board will look much the same, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/news\/education\/fl-primary-election-broward-school-board-20140826,0,535616.story\"><em>South Florida Sun-Sentinel<\/em> reports<\/a>. That includes Ann Murray, whose use of a racial epithet in 2007 was an issue during the campaign. Murray narrowly defeated Felicia Mychele Brunson.<\/p>\n<p>It was a similar story in Miami-Dade County, where the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/2014\/08\/26\/4310845\/incumbents-hold-big-early-leads.html\">district&#8217;s two longest-serving board members, Perla Tabarez Hantman and Marta Perez, won reelection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Duval County, voters in a district with low-performing schools that is the focus of a multi-million dollar teacher recruitment effort<a href=\"http:\/\/news.wjct.org\/post\/live-blog-2014-primary-elections\"> reelected incumbent Paula Wright<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Orange County voters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/features\/education\/os-orange-school-tax-election-20140820,0,5484374.story\">extended a half-cent addition to their sales tax for another decade<\/a>. The tax will raise $2 billion to pay for school construction and renovations. Nearly two-thirds of Orange County voters cast ballots in favor of keeping the tax.
