Rick Scott spent Monday touring high-tech South Florida companies looking to hire.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to make sure firms like Boca Raton&#8217;s Modernizing Medicine, which designs electronic medical record systems, have workers ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you think about \u2013 I\u2019ve got kids and even have, hard to believe, I have grandkids \u2013 the jobs of the future are going to be science, technology, engineering and math-related,&#8221; said Scott, a Republican. &#8220;So we need to do workforce training in those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/georgeleef\/2014\/06\/06\/true-or-false-america-desperately-needs-more-stem-workers\/\">Business leaders are worried the U.S. isn\u2019t producing enough scientists, engineers and other highly-skilled workers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>STEM is a hot topic in education. It\u2019s also important in the governor\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>Last week <a href=\"http:\/\/wlrn.org\/post\/charlie-crist-announces-running-mate-miami\">Democratic candidate Charlie Crist stopped at a tech incubator<\/a> and promised more emphasis on skilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>Job training is just one piece of Scott\u2019s plan. He also wants to create a state program to give public school teachers paid summer internships so they&#8217;ll take what they learn back to the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to take the top STEM teachers in our K-12 program and have paid internships \u2013 paid by the state,&#8221; he said, &#8220;where they go to work at companies like Modernizing Medicine&#8230;They\u2019ll come here and work for the summer and they\u2019ll go back and inspire their students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott also wants state colleges to create $10,000 degrees in science and technology fields. Scott has made the economy and education two of his top issues as he seeks reelection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
