Rick Scott to hold black and Hispanic students to a higher\u00a0standard. The Southern Poverty Law Center and Dream Defenders were in Tallahassee this week to deliver a petition\u2014with 5,800 signatures\u2014protesting Florida\u2019s race-based academic goals.<\/p>\n<p>By the 2017\/18 school year, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/news\/2012\/2012_10_16-3\/ga.pdf\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/news\/2012\/2012_10_16-3\/ga.pdf\">Florida Department of Education expects<\/a>\u00a092 percent of Asian students will pass their math tests at grade level. For Hispanic students, the goal is 80 percent. For black students, it\u2019s 74 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re sending a message that we expect less of certain kids for no reason other than the color of their skin,\u201d said Tania\u00a0Galloni, the managing attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Florida office. She went to Tallahassee with students and other activists to bring the petition against the unequal standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know from decades of research that when you lower expectations for a group of people, people internalize that information,\u201d said\u00a0Galloni.<\/p>\n<p><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-22042-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2014\/05\/RaceStand_web.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2014\/05\/RaceStand_web.mp3\">https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2014\/05\/RaceStand_web.mp3<\/a><\/audio><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The goals were adopted in 2012.
