Florida's education goals in math and reading currently vary by race.<\/p><\/div>\n

Students and civil rights activists have asked\u00a0Gov. Rick Scott to hold black and Hispanic students to a higher\u00a0standard. The Southern Poverty Law Center and Dream Defenders were in Tallahassee this week to deliver a petition\u2014with 5,800 signatures\u2014protesting Florida\u2019s race-based academic goals.<\/p>\n

By the 2017\/18 school year, the\u00a0Florida Department of Education expects<\/a>\u00a092 percent of Asian students will pass their math tests at grade level. For Hispanic students, the goal is 80 percent. For black students, it\u2019s 74 percent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sending a message that we expect less of certain kids for no reason other than the color of their skin,\u201d said Tania\u00a0Galloni, the managing attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Florida office. She went to Tallahassee with students and other activists to bring the petition against the unequal standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know from decades of research that when you lower expectations for a group of people, people internalize that information,\u201d said\u00a0Galloni.<\/p>\n

The goals were adopted in 2012. Supporters of the race-based goals\u00a0have argued<\/a>\u00a0that while the expectations are lower for blacks and Hispanics, they\u2019re actually more demanding because those student groups have more catching up to do.<\/p>\n

By 2022, the goals switch to 100 percent proficiency for all students.<\/p>\n

SPLC and the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County filed a\u00a0civil rights complaint<\/a>\u00a0with the Department of Justice against the Florida Department of Education last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went to the governor because at the end of the day he\u2019s responsible for the state,\u201d said Galloni. \u201cThis is a state-sanctioned policy that we have now that\u2019s sanctioning discrimination on the basis of race.\u201d<\/p>\n
