Rick Scott added higher education salaries to a website he set up to detail contracts, employee pay and other state spending.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the payroll for Florida&#8217;s 11 public universities <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridahasarighttoknow.com\/search_state_payroll.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The data was already posted online, which has university professionals wondering if Scott is trying to turn public opinion against academia. The <a href=\"http:\/\/htpolitics.com\/2011\/10\/17\/rick-scott-posts-university-faculty-salaries-online\/\"><em>Sarasota Herald-Tribune<\/em> quotes<\/a> Tom Auxter, president of the 5,000-member union representing university employees:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is hanging people out to roast,\u201d said Tom Auxter, president of the 5,000-member union that represents university faculty. \u201cThe governor is just trying to target faculty and make them uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Auxter said the data is misleading because it does not give people an understanding of faculty responsibilities. Many professors take on administrative duties and have other responsibilities that could lead to larger salaries, said Auxter, a philosophy professor at the University of Florida.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Scott has spent the summer and fall <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2011\/08\/29\/what-are-texas-seven-college-solutions\/\">pushing ideas<\/a> he believes will make the state university system more efficient. That includes asking colleges and universities to &#8220;drive&#8221; more students into degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.<\/p>\n<p>Scott has also circulated a controversial Texas proposal which attempts to quantify university performance. Critics say that plan is <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2011\/09\/13\/is-florida-ready-to-consider-texas-higher-ed-reforms\/\">too simplistic<\/a> and would hinder research universities&#8217; ability to seek new discoveries.<\/p>\n<p>Scott&#8217;s spokesman provided a terse answer for his motivations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are tax dollars and Floridians have a right to know where those tax dollars are being spent,\u201d spokeswoman Jackie Schutz told the <em>Herald-Tribune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
