It\u2019s how the 13-year teacher knows the new standards are working.<\/p>\n<p>Middle schools across Florida will begin using the new math and language arts standards when classes start this fall. Since making the switch, she says her students have taken more control of the lessons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/common-core\/\">Common Core has been fully adopted by 45 states<\/a>. But the standards have been criticized for their quality, for reducing local control over classroom content and for continuing emphasis on student test results to determine whether teachers and schools are successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve noticed in my classes now is they\u2019re loud. And that\u2019s OK,\u201d Norris said. \u201cWhere in the old days it was, no, you want that silent classroom, but the more they talk, they\u2019re all on task. They\u2019re all working on that same common goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/monroe.mysdhc.org\/\">Monroe has about 530 students right outside the gates of MacDill Air Force base<\/a>. Four of five students at the C-rated school qualify for federal free and reduced-priced lunches. She broke them into four groups and asks them to write about how different cultures tell the same story.<\/p>\n<p>Two girls talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/afropedia.wikia.com\/wiki\/Chinye\">Chinye, a West African version of Cinderella<\/a> in a corner of the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened in the story again? I forgot. \u2018Cause I know that the flamingo part\u2026?\u201d one student asked. \u201cDidn\u2019t she have those magical things? Those magical bean things?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeans?\u201d her partner responded. \u201cAre you talking about Jack and the Beanstalk?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo the gorge \u2013 things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gourd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGourds!\u201d the first student confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Two boys talked about essay structure across the room. Her timing was good \u2013 often stepping in just as student classwork focus headed sideways.<\/p>\n<p>Norris says giving students more control over their learning is a key component of Common Core. The standards outline what students should know at the end of each grade. But they also emphasize a package of teaching techniques \u2013 such as students working in small and large groups.<\/p>\n<p>She plans the lessons. But it\u2019s up to students to question, challenge and prod each other toward the goal written on the classroom whiteboard.<\/p>\n<p>Norris said she had trouble giving up control at first. But her students quickly proved they could handle the assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always say when the kids take over as teacher,\u201d she said, \u201cI know that they\u2019re really learning and understanding it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re probably familiar with the three R\u2019s \u2013 reading, \u2018riting, \u2018rithmetic.<\/p>\n<p>Over in Christina Phillips\u2019 sixth grade students learned about the three C\u2019s \u2013 claim, claim evidence and commentary.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips had her students read essays and identify whether the underlined text is making a statement, presenting evidence, or expressing a fact-based opinion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21586\"  class=\"wp-caption module image left\" style=\"max-width: 292px;\"><a class=\"fancybox\" title=\"A classroom chart explaining the differences between claims, claim evidence and commentary. Okay?\u201d Phillips asked. \u201cThe blue said \u2018This pig made his house of bricks.\u2019 Is that factual evidence from the text? Or is that my opinion?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s evidence!\u201d a student pops back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTextual evidence,\u201d Phillps confirmed. \u201cSo, blue would represent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaim evidence,\u201d the students said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaim evidence. So circle it and tell me how you know,\u201d she said, asking them to fill out their assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips said Common Core meant big changes in her lessons. It\u2019s all designed to make sure kids are prepared for college-level or professional work by the time they graduate high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour years ago, there wouldn\u2019t be any text in a writing assignment.\u201d She said. \u201cIt would simply be a prompt. And we would probably have kids writing a lot more anecdotes. Now, they have to use the text.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, it\u2019s what\u2019s expected at the higher level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Principal Kenneth Hart said a few teachers have struggled to turn over more control of lessons to students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s difficult for a lot of more mature teachers to be able to transition into that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s safe for me to teach you. It\u2019s safe for me to be the leader of the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In implementing Common Core, Monroe Middle School has made it a priority that every student participates in lessons. It will not penalize the student who comes from a military base in Kansas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Phillips, Norris and Hart think Common Core is an improvement. The standards eliminate some topics \u2013 giving teachers more time to focus on what\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers say they know <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/07\/15\/explaining-floridas-choices-for-its-next-standardized-test\/\">new Common Core tests<\/a> will be harder.
