Allison Rojas is a student at Design and Architecture Senior High in Miami.<\/p><\/div>\n

When Allison Rojas looks at a painting by Alice Neel, the high school junior sees more than a seated woman in a purple sari.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe uses very bold lines as you can see,\u201d says Rojas. \u201cVery fleshy paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rojas has an eye that\u2019s been trained in fine arts classes at Miami\u2019s Design and Architecture Senior High<\/a>. DASH is an arts magnet\u2014consistently ranked among the country\u2019s top public schools\u2014and every year, Rojas and her classmates have taken a fieldtrip with the school to Art Basel, where she gets to see works like Neel\u2019s Woman<\/i>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a unique opportunity for these students\u2014especially as so many of their peers don\u2019t get this kind of exposure.<\/p>\n

Research published by the Center for Fine Arts Education<\/a> shows that the more arts courses Florida students enroll in, the more likely they are to take the SAT and score well on standardized tests. And conversely, students who appear to be struggling academically generally take fewer arts courses than their peers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really want to have a report\u2014like a school report card,\u201d <\/b>says <\/b>Dr. Kathleen Sanz, president and CEO of the Center for Fine Arts Education.<\/p>\n

Sanz is supporting state legislation that would require schools to report arts access the same way they report information like graduation rates and demographics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it will help heighten the importance of the fine arts in the schools,\u201d says Sanz.<\/p>\n

Arts educators aren\u2019t the only ones who are troubled by the downward trend in arts enrollment.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everybody is academically inclined\u2014because, you know, there are people who can lead a full life without having to touch a paintbrush,\u201d says DASH senior Aaron Alonso, but he worries that other students may not get the chance to discover a passion in the arts.<\/p>\n
