The tweets include a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/common-core\/\">math and English language arts standards which outline what students should know at the end of each grade.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Florida is one of 45 states and the District of Columbia which have fully adopted the standards. But Common Core opponents are becoming more organized and vocal in Florida, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/08\/29\/florida-lawmaker-files-bill-to-stop-new-education-standards\/\">lawmaker introduced a bill last week<\/a> that would put implementation of the new standards on hold.<\/p>\n<p>The department tweeted out the first standards Tuesday. The standard of the day is the newest part of the department&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/07\/22\/florida-supporters-and-opponents-race-to-explain-common-core\/\">ongoing public relations campaign<\/a> to educate the public about the standards. Likewise, opponents are trying to raise questions and doubts about the standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/08\/19\/five-things-we-learned-about-common-core-this-summer\/\">Kindergarten, first and classes grade classes are using Common Core now<\/a>. Other grades are using a blend of Common Core and current standards this year. Common Core is scheduled to fully replace Florida&#8217;s standards at the beginning of the 2014 school year.<\/p>\n<p>New tests tied to the Common Core will <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/07\/15\/explaining-floridas-choices-for-its-next-standardized-test\/\">mostly replace the FCAT<\/a>, likely in early 2016. Those tests are expected to be <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/08\/12\/new-standards-will-require-rewriting-expectations-but-not-school-grading-formula\/\">more difficult and fewer students will meet state expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common Core State Standards, 140 characters at a time.
