Kruse has voted for and helped sponsor legislation opposing the Common Core.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Indiana lawmakers held the first of a series of hearings on the future of Common Core State Standards yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The first hearing focused on the quality of the standards, while subsequent meetings will look at assessment and cost.<\/p>\n<p>The Indiana hearings are important because the Hoosier State has become\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/indiana\/2013\/08\/05\/seven-posts-to-read-before-mondays-common-core-hearing\/\">something of a proxy for Common Core opponents across the country<\/a>. Indiana lawmakers approved a bill pausing implementation of the standards and accompanying testing. Florida advocates think they can <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/06\/28\/common-core-opponents-expecting-protesters-from-across-the-state\/\">introduce a similar bill for the next legislative session.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of those who spoke at the hearing are leading national voices both in favor and opposing the standards. Those not attending the hearing provided a running commentary on Twitter all afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/indiana\/2013\/08\/05\/common-core-right-for-indiana-or-less-rigorous-than-old-standards\/\">Our colleagues at StateImpact Indiana have a recap<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jason Zimba helped write the Common Core math standards. He says the <a title=\"How The Common Core Is Changing Math Instruction For Indiana\u2019s Youngest Students\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/indiana\/2013\/04\/05\/how-the-common-core-is-changing-math-instruction-for-indianas-youngest-students\/\" target=\"_blank\">new math standards<\/a> are a step in the right direction if Indiana wants to prepare more students for college and career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, the study of fractions in American schools has been criticized as the study of round food,\u201d says Zimba. \u201cBut in the previous Indiana K-5 standards, the word \u2018pizza\u2019 occurs more times in the study of fractions than the word \u2018number line\u2019 does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But opponents of the nationally-crafted standards told lawmakers the Common Core is less rigorous than the standards Indiana had before.<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndiana would be better off sticking with its current standards,\u201d says Bill Evers, a researcher at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. \u201cThat does mean there are not areas of improvement.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Indiana legislative panel must make a recommendation about standards to the state board of education by Nov. 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indiana lawmakers held the first of a series of hearings on the future of Common Core State Standards yesterday.
