{"id":18715,"date":"2013-05-24T16:18:38","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T20:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=18715"},"modified":"2013-05-24T16:18:40","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T20:18:40","slug":"bennett-ready-to-drill-into-the-data-to-improve-fcat-reading-scores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/05\/24\/bennett-ready-to-drill-into-the-data-to-improve-fcat-reading-scores\/","title":{"rendered":"Bennett Ready To &#8216;Drill Into The Data&#8217; To Improve FCAT Reading Scores"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_18717\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 268px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/05\/24\/bennett-ready-to-drill-into-the-data-to-improve-fcat-reading-scores\/fcat1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18717\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18717\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2013\/05\/FCAT1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2013\/05\/FCAT1.jpg 268w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2013\/05\/FCAT1-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2013\/05\/FCAT1-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Wishard of Oz\/flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students get one more year of the FCAT, then they begin taking Common Core assessments.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Education Commissioner Tony Bennett\u00a0is talking about<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/05\/24\/fcat-writing-scores-show-improvement\/\"> today&#8217;s Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) results.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Florida Department of Education (DOE) released results from <a href=\"http:\/\/fcat.fldoe.org\/mediapacket\/2013\/pdf\/2013FCAT20_Media_GR3V4.pdf\">3<sup>rd<\/sup> grade Reading and Mathematics assessments<\/a> as well as FCAT 2.0 <a href=\"http:\/\/fcat.fldoe.org\/mediapacket\/2013\/pdf\/2013FCAT20_Writing_V10.pdf\">Writing for grades 4, 8 and 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we have relatively static third grade reading and math scores, we think the writing component is a real step forward,\u201d Bennett said, noting that scores for third-graders didn&#8217;t change much from last year.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> grade students increased their reading scores by one percentage point and math scores stayed the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a person that doesn&#8217;t believe that static scores are really ever acceptable. We can&#8217;t be satisfied,\u201d Bennett said, \u201cand frankly I think the flat performance in reading is something we should take special notice to given our emphasis on reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe intend to drill into the data with our districts,\u201d Bennett said, \u201chelp our districts come up with improvement plans to make sure we are improving ourselves in those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a positive note, 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0graders saw a nine-point increase in the percentage of students scoring at 3.5 or higher in writing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 4th grade writing results, I think, show incredible improvement,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p>As Florida transitions to\u00a0<a style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; color: #003366; text-decoration: underline; outline: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/05\/09\/florida-teachers-will-attend-summer-camp-for-common-core-standards\/\">Common Core State Standards<\/a>,\u00a0Bennett said he expects to see improvement in all areas because\u00a0teachers will be better able to meet \u201cthe instructional needs of students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next year, students will again take FCAT 2.0 Reading, Writing and Math &#8211; then switch to the new Common Core assessments in 2014-15.<\/p>\n<p>Tidbits from DOE:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Results of the FCAT 2.0 Writing assessment show that overall, students in all grade levels tested (grades 4, 8 and 10) improved their scores with 58 percent of students scoring at 3.5 and higher, up from 54 percent in 2012.<\/li>\n<li>Twenty-five school districts made a 10 percentage point or greater improvement in the percent of 4th grade students earning a 3.5 and higher on FCAT 2.0 Writing.<\/li>\n<li>Overall in writing, African-American and Hispanic students reduced the achievement gap with their white student counterparts. The percentage of African-American and Hispanic students scoring 3.5 and higher increased by six and four points respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Students had 60 minutes to respond to the writing prompt, an increase of 15 minutes over last year. The time was increased to allow students more time to satisfy higher scoring requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DOE said districts will have hard copies of student writing scores on May 30<sup>th<\/sup>.
