New education standards taking effect in 2014 will require students use those skills.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sara LaBarbera is teaching 6<sup>th<\/sup> graders at Walker Middle School near Tampa how to research poets using an online library.<\/p>\n<p>One student, working on a series of questions about a Lewis Carroll poem, asks LaBarbera for help. He has the pieces, but doesn&#8217;t quite know how to put them together.<\/p>\n<p>LaBarbera knows how to ask the right questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlice seems, like, sad or depressed and the White Knight tries to cheer her up by singing her a song,\u201d the student says of the poem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK, so is it a poem that is telling you a story?\u201d LaBarbera asks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F85921924\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSort of,&#8221; he responds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you already know the name for that type of poem?\u201d LaBarbera prompts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell when you write an essay that tells a story, what type of essay is it?&#8221; she asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNarrative.&#8221; Then he pauses as the light goes off: &#8220;Ooooohhhhh\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LaBarbera is a media specialist \u2013 in another time they\u2019d be called librarians.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Media specialists have evolved as the world has grown more high-tech.<\/p>\n<p>New education standards, <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/common-core\/\">known as Common Core<\/a>, are set to take effect in 2014 will mean more changes. She carries around a handbook on the new standards layered with sticky notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour role changes to helping the students become information users,&#8221; she says, &#8220;helping them to see as much information is at their fingertips comes with a great responsibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And by 2015 a <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/technology\/\">state law requires half of classroom instruction is delivered digitally<\/a> \u2013 electronic textbooks or interactive websites.<\/p>\n<p>Media specialists can play a key role for schools, helping colleagues identify books, texts and other sources to use in classrooms.
