The schools are affiliated with K12, Inc.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A network of online charter schools tied to <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/tag\/k12\/\">education firm K12, Inc.<\/a> will not seek to open schools in Marion, Orange and Seminole counties next year, <em>The Orlando Sentinel<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer representing Florida Virtual Academy said the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/features\/education\/os-florida-virtual-charter-school-appeals-20130319,0,5794537.story?dssReturn\">schools would not be able to open by next fall<\/a> if the local school districts continued to oppose the schools. The charter schools plan to apply again in those districts.<\/p>\n<p>The schools are operated by K12, Inc., the nation&#8217;s largest online education firm. The <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/11\/florida-investigates-k12-nations-largest-online-educator\/\">Florida Department of Education is investigating whether the company used improperly certified teachers<\/a> to teach Florida students. Emails show Seminole County teachers <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/11\/read-the-documents-that-led-florida-to-investigate-k12-the-nations-largest-online-educator\/\">refused to sign class rosters containing students they had not taught<\/a>. K12 supervisors submitted the class rosters anyway.<\/p>\n<p>K12 officials have said <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/13\/what-k12-told-investors-about-floridas-investigation\/\">the conclusions by Seminole County investigators are incorrect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The company has been criticized for <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/16\/in-k12-courses-275-students-to-a-single-teacher\/\">high student-to-teacher ratios<\/a>, for <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/18\/read-the-virginia-lawsuit-accusing-k12-of-misleading-investors\/\">high turnover among its students and not reporting that students had dropped out in order to continue receiving funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Virtual Academy is <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/30\/florida-districts-fight-k12s-plan-for-virtual-charter-schools-more-flexibility-or-less-oversight\/\">seeking to open a network of charter schools around the state<\/a>. In many cases schools districts have opposed the online charter schools, but those decisions were overturned by the State Board of Education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/blogs\/gradebook\/pasco-school-board-drops-fight-with-florida-virtual-academy\/2107054\">Pasco County&#8217;s school board recently dropped its opposition<\/a> to Florida Virtual Academy&#8217;s application.<\/p>\n<p>The network has one school open in Osceola County, where <em>The Orlando Sentinel<\/em> says enrollment has not met expectations. The network is planning to open schools in Broward, Duval and Palm Beach counties.<\/p>\n<p>The schools are privately run, but publicly funded.
