We have many new companies looking for the workforce in STEM degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Florida College System has always been focused on STEM degrees, not only in our traditional transfer program, but also in all of the workforce development programs that we have,\u201d said FCS Chancellor Randy Hanna. \u201cNursing is a perfect example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While nursing isn\u2019t always considered a STEM field, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2013\/02\/26\/gov-scott-online-demand-for-stem-related-jobs-continues-to-increase\/\">Florida\u2019s Department of Economic Opportunity thinks it is<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Rick Scott announced more than 56,000 online job postings in STEM related fields in January. \u00a0&#8220;Registered Nurses\u201d topped the list, accounting for almost a third of the openings.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing isn&#8217;t included on the recently expanded\u00a0Department of Homeland Security\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ice.gov\/doclib\/sevis\/pdf\/stem-list.pdf\">STEM Designate Degree Programs list.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, \u201cmany of the subjects that nurses study are on the DHS program list including human biology, nutrition sciences, biological and physical sciences, chemistry, bio-chemistry, medical microbiology and bacteriology,\u201d said FCS Vice Chancellor for Research &amp; Analytics Scott Parke.<\/p>\n<p>Parke says other\u00a0federal agencies are expanding their STEM lists to include &#8220;the broad umbrella field of healthcare &#8211; which includes nursing.&#8221;<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost one-third of the bachelor\u2019s degrees bestowed upon graduates from the Florida College System (FCS) are in STEM &#8212; science, technology, engineering and math &#8212; fields.
