Rick Scott threatened a veto if lawmakers didn&#39;t match the education funding in his budget.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A year ago, Gov. Rick Scott drew a line in the sand for <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/01\/10\/liveblogging-gov-rick-scotts-state-of-the-state-address\/\">lawmakers listening to his State of the State speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scott wanted <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/01\/13\/inside-gov-scott%E2%80%99s-1-billion-education-plan\/\">$1 billion added to the K-12 education budget<\/a>. Nothing less.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I ask you to please consider that recommendation very carefully,&#8221; Scott said, according to the prepared speech. &#8220;On this point, I just cannot budge. I ask you again today to send me a budget that significantly increases state funding for education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Scott was back with another education-related request in his State of the State speech Tuesday, but this time his approach to winning <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/03\/05\/five-education-issues-to-watch-during-the-2013-florida-legislative-session\/\">support for across-the-board $2,500 raises for teachers<\/a> was more carrot, less stick.<\/p>\n<p>Scott <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/03\/05\/governor-we-dont-want-a-war-on-teachers-we-want-a-war-on-failure\/\">argued teachers deserve a raise<\/a>. And then he asked lawmakers to remember a a favorite teacher. Scott didn&#8217;t threaten a veto if lawmakers disagree.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like me, you all are probably here today thanks to a great teacher who believed in you,&#8221; Scott said. Then Scott asked for a show of support &#8212; at once literal and metaphorical.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will you please stand now in honor of that great teacher?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A year ago, Gov.
