Manny Diaz, Jr. wants school districts to post testing schedules for local assessments. They&#39;re already required to post schedules for statewide tests.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A House committee unanimously approved a bill requiring school districts to post standardized testing schedules online.<\/p>\n<p>Districts are already required to post the schedule for state-mandated <a href=\"http:\/\/fcat.fldoe.org\/fcat\/\">tests such as the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schools districts would have to identify additional testing they&#8217;ve required. Rep. Manny Diaz, Jr, R-Hialeah, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=49246\">districts would have to post the schedule<\/a> by October 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0of each school year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This allows for all of the stakeholders in the districts \u2013 parents, teachers community members \u2013 to know exactly what\u2019s going going on and which tests are local tests, which tests are state mandated tests,\u201d Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year local school board members <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/06\/14\/florida-school-board-members-say-education-commissioner-challenged-their-authority\/\">asked state lawmakers to put less emphasis on test results to assess student, teacher, school and district performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz was asked why he wanted the rule to be in state statutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some districts that already post their testing schedule, however it is not uniform across the state,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cI want to bring up that there are districts that have up to 151 additional tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to preempt local control with this bill,&#8221;\u00a0Diaz said.\u00a0&#8220;I just want them basically to own up to their testing schedules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is a bill of transparency,&#8221; said\u00a0Rep. Janet Adkins, R-Fernandina Beach. &#8220;As a parent of two children in middle school, it\u2019s important to me to know when the testing is taking place, and currently I do not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not uncommon for my children to come home and say they took a test today &#8211; a district assessment test \u2013 and I had no formal knowledge of it,\u201d Adkins said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Karen Castor Dental, D-Maitland, said local districts may do a lot of their own testing to determine whether students are ready for state-mandated assessments. She supported the bill but suggested the\u00a0high stakes, state-wide tests should be changed.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal passed the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Committees\/committeesdetail.aspx?SessionId=73&amp;CommitteeId=2700\"> Education Appropriations Subcommittee<\/a> 13 \u2013 0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A House committee unanimously approved a bill requiring school districts to post standardized testing schedules online.
