Jack Latvala becomes law.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the Florida House has<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/01\/14\/florida-legislature-puts-tuition-for-children-of-immigrants-at-top-of-agenda\/\"> plenty of education-related bills to consider<\/a>, Senators have introduced even more.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0180\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">introduced a bill, SB 180, granting the U.S. citizen children<\/a> of undocumented immigrants in-state tuition rates. Those students would have to attend school in Florida for four years and apply to college within twelve months of graduating from a Florida high school.<\/p>\n<p>Another Senate bill would open up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0260\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">in-state tuition to U.S. military veterans<\/a>. Veterans say it is often difficult to cash in their education benefits because <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/01\/04\/why-higher-education-is-more-difficult-for-veterans\/\">they can not secure in-state tuition rates using military documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, SB 260, grants in-state tuition to veterans who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0260\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">reside in Florida while attending college, or who attend a physical college campus in Florida<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Another bill, SB 198, proposes a constitutional amendment which would require <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0198\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">Florida school districts pay teachers at least the national average<\/a>. McKay scholarships allow students with disabilities to use the money for tuition at a private school of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>One, SB 226, creates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0226\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">a two-week &#8220;disability history and awareness&#8221; instruction program<\/a> starting in the 2014-2015 school year. The bill creates a committee to help the Department of Education design program curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>SB 150 creates a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0150\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">&#8220;Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children&#8217;s Educational Bill of Rights,&#8221;<\/a> and requires state and local school officials to recognize the needs of hard-of-hearing students. Another bill, SB 128, requires physicians refer children to a specialist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0128\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">if his or her parents suspects they are autistic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other bills would make smaller changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SB 134 requires school districts hold one meeting per quarter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0134\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">&#8220;after school hours or during the evening hours.&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>SB 162 changes how much students earning high school equivalency diplomas count <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0162\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">in the state school grading formula<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>SB 154 requires schools to employ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/0154\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">one counselor per specified number of students<\/a>, with an overall school district ratio of one counselor for every 300 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To check out all the Senate bills which have been filed so far, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bills\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the Florida House has plenty of education-related bills to consider, Senators have introduced even more.
