{"id":15970,"date":"2013-01-14T10:35:20","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T15:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=15970"},"modified":"2013-01-14T10:35:22","modified_gmt":"2013-01-14T15:35:22","slug":"additional-florida-school-security-could-cost-100-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/01\/14\/additional-florida-school-security-could-cost-100-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Additional Florida School Security Could Cost $100 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15971\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 297px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/01\/14\/additional-florida-school-security-could-cost-100-million\/school-gate-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15971\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15971\" title=\"school gate 1\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2013\/01\/school-gate-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Crazytales562\/flickr<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">School district leaders are asking for more money in the Safe Schools fund to upgrade security.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two Florida Senate committees will discuss ideas to improve school safety and security in Tallahassee this week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an issue that is suddenly considered a priority for lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Districts have been reviewing their security procedures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-201_162-57563767\/newtown-debates-future-of-sandy-hook-elementary-school-where-26-died\/\">since 26 people were killed &#8211; most of them students &#8211; inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Committees\/Show\/ED\/\">Senate Education Committee<\/a> convenes Tuesday to start work on what kind of safety changes are needed in Florida\u2019s school districts.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Committees\/Show\/AED\/\">Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education<\/a> will look at the cost of upgrading security.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/fefp\/pdf\/fefpdist.pdf\">The \u201cSafe Schools\u201d fund spends close to $70 million a year on security<\/a>. The money mainly pays for school resource officers in middle and high schools.<\/p>\n<p>The Legislature will be asked to significantly increase that amount to pay for other security measures.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wayne Blanton with the Florida School Boards Association said, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2013\/01\/09\/florida-school-board-leader-supports-more-school-security-opposes-arming-teachers\/\">It will be in excess of $100 million<\/a>\u201d &#8212; an additional $30 million or so.<\/p>\n<p>Blanton says he\u2019s heard suggestions like adding panic buttons in classrooms, installing sturdier windows, and making sure all classroom doors lock from the inside.<\/p>\n<p>School entry is also a big concern. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsserviceflorida.com\/\">District leaders plan to ask for help upgrading entry gates and surveillance cameras.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two Florida Senate committees will discuss ideas to improve school safety and security in Tallahassee this week.
