She was also concerned that some districts have yet to report evaluation &#8212; amounting to about one-quarter of all teachers in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Patton said school districts are open to changing education policy, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naplesnews.com\/news\/2012\/dec\/07\/patton-to-state-on-teacher-evals-get-it-right\/\">according to the <em>Naples Daily News<\/em><\/a>, but that the state needs to get things sorted. From the story<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We keep saying to the state, we&#8217;re never against your thoughts, but get it right,&#8221; Patton said during a meeting with the Daily News&#8217; editorial board.<\/p>\n<p>Among concerns she mentioned was the fact that the largest district in the state \u2014 Miami-Dade County \u2014 is not included in the initial data. The data released Wednesday is preliminary and the district has yet to report its information to the state.<\/p>\n<p>Patton also said, however, that a portion of the system aimed at determining a teacher&#8217;s impact on student learning \u2014 the so-called value-added model \u2014 appears to have worked.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, lawmakers both questioned and defended the evaluations at a Tallahassee hearing Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Interim Education Commissioner Pam Stewart said the new system is on track, though she acknowledged the problems. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefloridacurrent.com\/article.cfm?id=30579749&amp;utm_source=not_lt_user&amp;utm_medium=article_link&amp;utm_campaign=current_email\">From the Florida Current<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou telling me that a first grade teacher\u2019s evaluation will be dependent upon students who perhaps that teacher had never seen?\u201d said <strong>Sen. Bill Montford<\/strong>, D-Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is correct,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cThere are some districts that have assessments that do measure first grade teachers and kindergarten teachers and some that do not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart conceded the system is off to a rough start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time you implement anything this large there are growing pains,\u201d she said.
