{"id":14762,"date":"2012-11-09T11:11:19","date_gmt":"2012-11-09T16:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=14762"},"modified":"2012-11-09T11:13:41","modified_gmt":"2012-11-09T16:13:41","slug":"teachers-one-step-closer-to-a-pay-raise-in-miami-dade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/11\/09\/teachers-one-step-closer-to-a-pay-raise-in-miami-dade\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers One Step Closer to a Pay Raise in Miami-Dade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14765\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/11\/09\/teachers-one-step-closer-to-a-pay-raise-in-miami-dade\/money-jar\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14765\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14765\" title=\"money jar\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/11\/money-jar-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/11\/money-jar-300x262.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/11\/money-jar.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Tax Credits \/ FLICKR<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Miami-Dade teachers are hoping to bump the starting salary to $40,000.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Miami-Dade teachers are one step closer to a pay raise.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the teachers union, Karen Aronowitz, and her 28 member bargaining team signed off today on a tentative agreement that would provide salary increases while maintaining health care for teachers and education support professionals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today we reached a contractual agreement with the district that moves us forward,\u201d Aronowitz said.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of the Agreement:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salary<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One step increase on the salary matrix for eligible teachers<\/li>\n<li>$40,000 starting salary for teachers<\/li>\n<li>$1,000 salary improvement at the top of the salary schedule making the top step worth $69,225<!--more--><\/li>\n<li>2.25% across the board increase for school support personnel (Paraprofessionals, Clerical and Security)<\/li>\n<li>All improvements to salary above effective December 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0(reflected on January 13 paycheck)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Health Insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintained Employer paid free option for employee-only coverage<\/li>\n<li>Provided option for employees on OAP10 who pay for dependents to save money by switching to OAP20<\/li>\n<li>Reduced Co-pays by $20 for Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapies<\/li>\n<li>Maintained maximum out-of-pocket at 2012 levels<\/li>\n<li>Certain plan design and dependent premium changes were agreed to in return for the above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Future Salary and Health Care Re-openers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Agreement is for 3 years, with re-openers each year.<\/li>\n<li>UTD demanded and the parties agreed to return to the table in February 2013 to discuss salary and future steps, as well as insurance, for the next year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>The contract will now go before the bargaining unit for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>A tentative date for the ratification vote is set for November 19<sup>th<\/sup>. And the School Board would then have to ratify the agreement on November 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur teachers and education support professionals have made Miami-Dade public schools the premiere district in the nation,&#8221; Aronowitz said about the district that was recently awarded the best large, urban school district in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think that this agreement is a sign that our economy is headed in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can view <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utd.org\/news\/utd-miami-dade-school-board-reach-contract-agreement-move-forward-with-salary-increase-and-health-benefits\">the full tentative agreement<\/a> on the United Teachers of Dade website here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miami-Dade teachers are one step closer to a pay raise.
