Rick Scott listens to teachers at Boca Raton High School during his Education Listening Tour.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Election Day isn\u2019t keeping the State Board of Education from meeting this week in Boca Raton.<\/p>\n<p>The panel has a full agenda on Election Day that includes a discussion of whether to appeal court rulings in two lawsuits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_11_06\/peek.pdf\">Teacher evaluations<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0 The Florida Education Association and two named teachers sued the State Board of Education and the Department of Education over changes to way teachers are evaluated.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_11_06\/ruiz.pdf\">Out-of-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants<\/a> \u2013 The plaintiffs are five U.S. citizens whose parents are undocumented. The students are charged costly out-of-state tuition because of their parents&#8217; legal status. The Board will decide whether to appeal the ruling that said the students can pay the cheaper in-state tuition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Board will also get an update on the move from textbooks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_11_06\/digital.pdf\">digital materials<\/a>, and the roll out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_11_06\/ccss.pdf\">common core standards<\/a> and assessments. Both transitions have begun and will continue through 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceWPmore\" title=\"More...\"><!--more-->Monday afternoon workshops\u00a0 will feature Gov. Rick Scott\u2019s education agenda and presentations about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_11_05-2\/beesspres.pdf\">special education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scott will lay out his<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flgov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/College-and-Career-1st-FINAL.pdf\">College and Career FIRST Plan<\/a>, compiled after his listening tour of schools around the state.<\/p>\n<p>His plan has three goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintain accountability while focusing on the successful transition to more rigorous Common Core State Standards and assessments, which better measure readiness for college and careers.<\/li>\n<li>Support teachers and equip them with the tools they need to improve their practice as professionals and to help students realize better educational outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Allow choices and flexibility in districts, schools and classrooms that recognize the unique needs of students and teachers and support efforts to achieve improved results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Both days of workshops and meetings are being held at Boca Raton High School.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Election Day isn\u2019t keeping the State Board of Education from meeting this week in Boca Raton.
