That\u2019s a 4.4 percent increase over the current year.<\/li>\n<li>The Board figures the state&#8217;s transition to digital textbooks over the next few years will<a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/25\/explaining-floridas-shift-to-digital-textbooks\/\"> cost $441 million<\/a>.Vice Chairman Roberto Martinez likes the idea of giving districts the freedom to choose whatever materials they think will work best in the classroom. \u201cI think we\u2019re at that stage where we can give them that kind of freedom to accomplish the outcomes that we want,\u201d Martinez said.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s still no decision as to whether the state will appeal a judge\u2019s decision in <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/10\/08\/how-will-the-florida-board-of-education-respond-to-immigrant-tuition-ruling\/\">a tuition lawsuit<\/a>. U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore found that Florida\u2019s practice of charging out-of-state tuition to Florida residents whose parents are undocumented is unconstitutional. The Board is awaiting the judge\u2019s final ruling.<\/li>\n<li>The Board discussed a lawsuit that claims <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefloridacurrent.com\/article.cfm?id=29716440\">the state is unconstitutionally reneging<\/a> on its responsibility to provide students with a high quality education. The plaintiffs in Citizens for Strong Schools v. Haridopolos say schools are unsafe and underfunded. Martinez called their efforts \u201can exercise in futility.\u201d The case is awaiting trial in Leon County.<\/li>\n<li>A plan adopted by the Board would<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/2012-10-09\/features\/os-charter-schools-expansion-florida-20121009_1_charter-schools-traditional-schools-florida-education-leaders\"> expand school choice options<\/a> and double enrollment in charter schools over the next six years. Options include private school vouchers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/board\/meetings\/2012_10_09\/leg.pdf\">2013 Legislative priorities for the Board<\/a>:\u00a0 K-12 Accountability, Workforce Readiness, School Choice, Common Core State Standards Transition, Teacher Preparation Program Accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Board meets again November 5th and 6th in Boca Raton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The State Board of Education had a day-long meeting in Orlando Tuesday.
