Rick Scott\u2019s priority since he was on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p>He told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday his focus now is on education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at where the state\u2019s going long-term, if we have the best education system, we\u2019re going to have the jobs,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will figure it out. Americans, Floridians, we are going to build an economy that works. But it\u2019s clearly tied to continuing to get a better education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether education is now a higher priority to him than job creation, Scott responded, \u201cI don\u2019t think you can pick one or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Scott wants to hold education funding steady in the next fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Since a small surplus is expected in the overall budget, he suggested education may get additional funding \u201cas long as we can control the growth rate of Medicaid and our economy gets better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education funding was one of the topics at Scott&#8217;s dinner with leaders of the <a href=\"http:\/\/feaweb.org\/\">Florida Education Association<\/a> (FEA). He hosted them last week at the Governor\u2019s Mansion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I met with the union leadership Friday night, we talked about a variety of things.\u201d Scott said. \u201cOne thing I made sure I let them know is my goal is to continue to sustain existing funding through K-12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott said everyone who has a stake in education should be focused only on making sure <a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/09\/18\/how-the-governor-wants-to-cut-red-tape-in-education\/\">students are prepared for college or a career<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Increasing the number of jobs in Florida has been Gov.
