{"id":12119,"date":"2012-08-29T13:37:33","date_gmt":"2012-08-29T17:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/?p=12119"},"modified":"2012-08-30T22:50:40","modified_gmt":"2012-08-31T02:50:40","slug":"the-earlier-schools-hire-the-better-teachers-they-get","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/08\/29\/the-earlier-schools-hire-the-better-teachers-they-get\/","title":{"rendered":"The Earlier Schools Hire, The Better Teachers They Get"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_12426\"  class=\"wp-caption module image right\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/2012\/08\/29\/the-earlier-schools-hire-the-better-teachers-they-get\/taravela-high-principal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12426\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12426\" title=\"Taravela High Principal\" src=\"http:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/08\/Taravela-High-Principal-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/08\/Taravela-High-Principal-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/florida\/files\/2012\/08\/Taravela-High-Principal-620x465.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Sarah Gonzalez \/ StateImpact Florida<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">JP Taravela High Principal Shawn Cerra with the school&#39;s guidance director, Jody Gaver.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When JP Taravela High school went into the summer break, there were 16 teacher vacancies &#8212; three resigned or relocated, 13 retired.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, five more teachers resigned, according to the school&#8217;s principal Shawn Cerra.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I lost four out of the five to the virtual world,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Broward County teachers left the school to become Florida Virtual School teachers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They showed the respect that we look for by letting me know they were going into the interview or when they filled out an application,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;So I had an idea that some were interested in leaving, but I really didn&#8217;t know for sure until late July, early August.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I guess that&#8217;s when [FLVS] was doing their hiring &#8212; in the middle to late July.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cerra had just two weeks to find and hire five new teachers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The district placed a couple of surplus teachers at his school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Which is fine, we&#8217;re happy to have them,&#8221; Cerra said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the Applicant Pool Shrinks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doug Peden is with the American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE) &#8212;\u00a0It tracks teacher supply and demand across the country.<\/p>\n<p>He says the applicant pool becomes smaller and smaller in the final days of the summer break.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know from the work we&#8217;ve done, the earlier you hire the better candidate you get.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peden says the best teachers usually have no problem finding a job in the communities they live in.<\/p>\n<p>And the distance unemployed teachers are willing to move shrinks the closer you get to the start of the school year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is someone going to move from Washington state to Florida if they have two weeks and there&#8217;s a job?
