It focuses on kids in the Jacksonville area who go hungry on the weekends.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Children get backpacks at the end of each school week containing breakfast, lunch and dinner items. The food is ready-to-eat or easy to prepare at home. There\u2019s enough food to feed a family of four for two days or longer during holiday breaks.<\/p>\n<p>The cost per child for a weekly backpack is $100 per year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailybillboards.com\/\">Daily Billboards<\/a> and Second Harvest are teaming up to raise funds for the program this month. They hope to provide an additional 2,100 children with food on the weekends during the coming school year.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Billboards will use their signs to ask donors to help Second Harvest achieve its goal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnbweb1.blackbaud.com\/OPXDONATE\/AddDonor.asp?cguid=1ECC453C-E633-4AF8-83BF-CBBF117048E4&amp;sTarget=https%3A%2F%2Fdnbweb1.blackbaud.com%2FOPXDONATE%2Fdonate.asp%3Fcguid%3D1ECC453C%252DE633%252D4AF8%252D83BF%252DCBBF117048E4%26dpid%3D18378&amp;sid=3E8B4B27-E7DB-4D27-94B2-6785ED02BAC4\">Donations can be made online<\/a>, or cell phone users can text FEEDHOPE to 20222 to make a $10 donation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungry children can\u2019t thrive,\u201d said Bruce Ganger, executive director of Second Harvest North Florida. \u201cIf they go home for a weekend and don\u2019t eat, they come to school on Mondays and can\u2019t learn or concentrate on their schoolwork. They have headaches and stomachaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Second Harvest, more than 600 children received weekly assistance through the BackPack Program during the 2011-12 school year, and that number will grow to more than 700 in 2012-13.<\/p>\n<p>The additional 2,100 backpacks would be distributed through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2-harvest.org\/24\/kids-cafe\/\">Second Harvest Kids Cafe program<\/a>, which serves children snacks as part of certified after-school programs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We know that a lot of children depend on schools for their meals through free and reduced-price food programs.
