For today\u2019s installment in our series, The Secret Lives of Students<\/a>, students wrote and reported on class punishment.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is an unreasonable procedure that teachers use: one student acts up and the whole class is punished for the one student\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

This can cause bullying, the whole class can turn against the teacher, it\u2019s not healthy to take away recess for a whole class, and it\u2019s just not effective.<\/p>\n

Breakthrough Miami<\/p>

Shawn Thomas, 12, got his whole class punished because he was making funny noises in class at Miami Children\u2019s Museum Charter School.<\/p><\/div>\n

Shawn Thomas, 12, shared his experiences. He said he \u201cfelt guilty\u201d that the entire class got in trouble because he was \u201cmaking funny noises\u201d in class.<\/p>\n

Ms. Emily Torres, 21, is an elementary education major at Florida State University, and a teacher intern with Breakthrough Miami.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe in one for all and all for one,\u201d Ms. Torres said.\u00a0\u201cIn order to be strong, we have to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy students think it\u2019s unfair and they don\u2019t understaned why I use that policy,” she said.\u00a0\u201cI choose this method because I believe students need to understand how to work together and rely on each other.”<\/p>\n

Jazlyn Garcia is a student who has been punished for a classmate\u2019s behavior. She said she \u201cfelt terrible\u201d because she was \u201cblamed for something [she] didn\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe teacher should listen to the kids\u2019 stories and try fixing the problem,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n

Breakthrough Miami<\/p>

Jazlyn Garcia, 10, says she was punished in class for something another student did at Mater Academy Charter School.<\/p><\/div>\n

She was frustrated with the student who caused the entire class to get in trouble and said she told him that he \u201cshould be ashamed of himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

We think this is an ineffective and lazy procedure that teachers shouldn\u2019t use and students disagree with.<\/p>\n

Joshua Johnson, 11, is a student at Young Men\u2019s Preparatory Academy and Joshua Partridge, 10, attends Doctors Charter School. During the summer school program with Breakthrough Miami, both students attend The Cushman School campus.<\/em><\/p>\n
