100 Degree Heat Drives Up Electricity Price

ERCOT is asking customers to conserve during the late afternoon when demand peaks, but earlier today emailed the media: “Please be aware that the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has not entered an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) situation.”
Here’s what scorching temps mean to prices on the wholesale market:

Houston (Platts)–25Jun2012/440 pm EDT/2040 GMT Some real-time power prices in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas footprint spiked to more than $100/MWh Monday afternoon on forecasts of triple-digit temperatures across the state. The on-peak South Hub real-time price reached $102.07/MWh at 1:15 p.m. CDT, having begun the day around $26/MWh.
