“Fracking or Fracing?”

Bat­tlestar Gal­lac­tica aside, we at State Impact vote for “frack­ing.” It just looks bet­ter. And there’s no con­fu­sion when it comes to pro­nun­ci­a­tion. What do you think?


Hydraulic frac­tur­ing has become a hotbed of con­tro­versy, but so has its nick­name — frack­ing. But the ori­gin of the “frack­ing” moniker is far more innocu­ous than its cur­rent use in cer­tain cir­cles, as a kind of exple­tive. Bat­tlestar Galac­tica used “frack­ing” as a sur­ro­gate for the more pop­u­lar F-word.

    Would you rather be “fracked” or “fraced”? I think the gas indus­try has been pur­pose­fully ush­er­ing the term “frac­ing” into usage because it seems like a kinder, gen­tler word. I’d vote for Frack­ing, with a cap­i­tal F.    Liz, KeepTapWaterSafe.org
