As New York State Debates New Drilling Rules, Energy Companies Ramp Up Spending on Ads and Lobbyists

Pub­lic hear­ings on New York’s pro­posed nat­ural gas drilling rules con­tinue next week. Ten­sions are high among the res­i­dents of New York’s south­ern tier, and the gas indus­try is work­ing hard to sell its case.


ALBANY — Energy com­pa­nies have been pour­ing mil­lions of dol­lars into tele­vi­sion adver­tis­ing, lob­by­ing and cam­paign con­tri­bu­tions as the admin­is­tra­tion of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo enters the final phase of decid­ing when and where to allow a con­tro­ver­sial form of extrac­tion that is hotly opposed by envi­ron­men­tal groups.
