An Updated ‘Dallas’ Takes on the Battle Between Fracking and Alternative Fuels

For anyone who loved watching J.R. feud with family members over Texas oil money, TNT’s remake of ‘Dallas’ may be a nostalgic return to ’80′s television. It gets panned by the Times in this review, which is too bad, because there’s just so much good material for the writers to play with on the fracking front.


The writers have reconstituted the feuds of the second generation of Ewings as an allegory about clean energy versus fossil fuels: Bobby’s sweet, well-meaning son, Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe), has turned his back on drilling and wants to develop methane hydrates as an energy source. He spends a lot of time on Skype with Chinese scientists. “I know that I can make Ewing Alternative Energies the next Exxon,” he tells his proud father.
