Ohio State Board of Education District 1 Candidates: Stanley Jackson, Ann Jacobs

State Board of Education District 1 covers Ohio’s northwestern quadrant outside of major cities.

It includes the following counties: Allen, Auglaize, Champaign, Crawford, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Logan, Marion, Mercer, Morrow, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, Union, Van Wert, Williams, Wyandot, plus the northern half of Darke County and the southeastern corner of Fulton County.

Incumbent Ann Jacobs, a lawyer, is running against Stanley Jackson, a radio sports commentator and founder of a company called Integrated American Media who also currently serves on the state board. Jackson was appointed by Gov. John Kasich earlier this year to a vacant seat to serve out the remaining months of an unexpired term.

To create this voters guide, StateImpact Ohio posed a set of questions to every state Board of Education candidate. We sent the same survey to every state Board of Education candidate. Candidate responses were limited to 200 words.

Why are you running for state Board of Education? Candidate did not respond to questionnaire. There needs to be a continuing voice on the Board of Education, advocating a non-partisan viewpoint. I have almost completed my first term and can apply my experience to further service.

Why should people vote for you? Candidate did not respond to questionnaire. Because I am the experienced incumbent and have a background on a local school board as well as a vocational school board. Becuase I don’t have an agenda to “go into politics for a while now,” but want to contribute to public education. I encourage voters to examine my voting record and to know that my first and foremost concern is the continual improvement of the quality of public education in Ohio.

How can the state Board of Education improve educational outcomes for Ohio children? Candidate did not respond to questionnaire. Encourage compliance with the Common Core State standards. Participate in the development and implementation of Early Learning and the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Propose budgets that enable schools to close the achievement gap, and to improve the already high national ranking which we enjoy.

What should the state Board of Education do about the problems with school attendance data? Candidate did not respond to questionnaire. The ODE needs to no longer assume that districts are truthfully reporting their attendance data. There need to be more cross checks and independent monitotoring of EMIS data. The information contained in the Auditor’s Interim Report will be supplemented upon completion of the investigation. This is a troubling reality that need to be corrected. I hope the final report will indicate that the vast majority of Ohio School Districts have done honest reporting. Clearly there needs to be more oversight by ODE.

What would you look for in Ohio’s next state superintendent? Candidate did not respond to questionnaire. A Superintendent who has been properly selected and vetted to ensure that there are no “skeletons” in his or her closet. The Superintendent needs to be experienced and have the professional and personal integrity to make decisions and recommendations that are best for Ohio’s students. It is imperative that the Superintendent have no allegiance or indebtedness to either political party.
