Thought Capping College Tuition Would Boost Fees? Think Again.

Contrary to what you may believe, Ohio’s public colleges and universities have not tried to get around state limits on tuition increases by raising other fees, the Columbus Dispatch reports: In the 4 years before the tuition limits went into effect, college costs (tuition, mandatory fees and room and board) at Ohio state schools rose 31 percent. Since then, costs have risen 17 percent.


Ohio State has tried to be mindful of the burden that increasing costs place on students and their families, and it has frozen mandatory fees the past two years, spokeswoman Amy Murray said. It also has significantly increased financial aid and is looking for unconventional sources of funding, such as the recent decision to lease the school’s parking operation to private investors for $483 million.
