Teacher Shares Advice After 50 Years in the Classroom: Better Teachers Won’t Help Schools

Francis Corbin is retiring after 50 years in the classroom. He shared some advice with the Marion Star this week about the importance of parents to student success.

He also shared this line from his own favorite teacher, who never let students say they “can’t” do something: “He said, ‘Can’t died in the poor house.””


While grateful for his time teaching, Corbin said students could also be frustrating. He estimated that when he started teaching, only a few wouldn’t complete assignments. Today, he said, “that number would be a lot higher.”

“Students, their education isn’t important to them as much,” he said. “Kids not wanting to do it. Better teachers is not going to help education. There’s too many excuses why students aren’t learning.”
