Students Sell Soap to Raise Money for Laptops

We’re familiar with bake sales and wrapping paper, popcorn and candy fundraisers. But laundry detergent? Students at a Newark, Ohio middle school are setting private-label detergent and fabric softener to raise money to buy technology for their classrooms.

By the way, last year Newark got about $1.5 million less in state funding and educated about 200 more students than it did five years ago, according to state data. Also, Newark students do better on state tests now than they did five years ago.

There are just a few days left of the middle school detergent sale, which ends Friday. The detergent and fabric softener are from a private label company that is comparable to many leading brands. The liquid comes in a 5-gallon bucket with a pump and lasts an average of 350 loads. It is available for high efficiency and regular washing machines.

For each bucket sold, Northridge Middle School will receive $11. All of the funds will be used to fund technology for the middle school, including new laptops and possibly iPads or SMARTboards for the classrooms. The top seller also will earn a reward. So, if you know a Northridge Middle School student, contact her soon to participate. This is a great fundraiser because it is something we all use, and the money goes to the kids.
