State Board of Education Member Angela Thi Bennett Resigns

State Board of Education member Angela Thi Bennett has resigned because she expects to take on a new job with a charter school, Gongwer News Service reports. Bennett is a lawyer and was appointed by Gov. John Kasich in Feb. 2011.

With her resignation, there are now three vacancies on the 19-member board that Kasich has not yet filled. An at-large seat has been vacant since January. The elected seat held by the late Jeff Hardin has been vacant since Hardin’s death in March.

Ms. Bennett said she is under consideration for the position of superintendent of a Cleveland-area community school. She declined to name the school because the decision has yet to be finalized.

“What I’m hoping to be able to do is really carry forward the initiatives that I’m just passionate about and that’s just making a difference in the lives of children,” she said in an interview. “Stepping down from the state board and looking at this opportunity to serve as superintendent will put me in direct contact with students.”
