Some Toledo Teachers Could Receive Bonuses Based on School Performance

The Toledo school district will use federal grant funds to test out giving teachers bonuses if students at their schools do well. The bonuses for teachers in three elementary schools will be awarded if students at their schools learn more than the minimum expected each year in reading or math. (Teachers at one high school will receive bonus payments under a separate plan.)

The Blade says bonuses at one elementary school could reach $500. That’s about 1 percent of the annual salary of a teacher with five years of experience.

Kevin Dalton, Toledo Federation of Teachers president, said that the union is hesitant to tie teacher compensation to student performance and test scores but recognized that legislation and public perception of the concept is shifting.

Accepting a pilot plan that for now only includes bonuses was a way for the union to give input on any future, more comprehensive plans.

“We look at this as a first step, and a learning experience,” Mr. Dalton said.
