“Schools that use seclusion must not abuse it: editorial”

The Cleveland Plain Dealer Editorial Board took on the issue of seclusion rooms yesterday, based on our Locked Away series. “Seclusion may have disciplinary benefits in some cases, but it must not be overused and it must not be used simply for the convenience of educators,” the board writes. The editorial concludes that “sensible guidelines born of careful study can’t come soon enough.”


Sometimes Ohio schoolteachers feel the need to put youngsters with disabilities who are violent into a secluded room so they won’t hurt themselves or others. But Ohio’s lack of a statewide policy on the proper use of seclusion — as revealed in a series called “Locked Away” by The Columbus Dispatch and StateImpactOhio, which is affiliated with National Public Radio and Ohio public radio stations — is a disservice to youngsters and teachers alike.
