Ohio State to Include NCAA Violation Clause in Football Coach Urban Meyer’s Contract

Ohio State trustees are expected to formally approve football coach’s Urban Meyer contract later this week.

As we reported in November, when Meyer was signed as former coach Jim Tressel’s replacement under an agreement he’d make at least $24 million over 6 years:

Meyer’s compensation, which puts him in the upper echelon of coach compensation, is evidence of escalation in the college football arms race. Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee said Meyer will be the fourth-highest paid coach in the nation. Meyer will make more than three times more than Gee, and $250,000 more than former coach Jim Tressel would have earned this season.

One main difference from Tressel’s deal: Meyer’s contract goes into greater detail about what he must do if he becomes aware there is a potential violation of NCAA rules.

“Given the circumstances we had, we felt it was important to put provisions in there to make sure the right safeguards are in place on both sides,” said athletic director Gene Smith in a phone interview. “That’s been strengthened and beefed up.”
