Ohio School District Relies on Chesapeake Energy Payments to Balance Budget

The superintendent of an eastern Ohio school district says that without a new drilling lease with oil and gas company Chesapeake Energy, the district would be in a financial emergency. The superintendent of the Edison school district, located near the West Virginia border, says the school district expects to receive a a $700,000 payment from the drilling company this summer. The school district is counting on the money to balance its budget for the coming school year.

[Superintendent Dave] Quattrochi said parents shouldn’t be alarmed, because the drilling will be below the surface near the schools. Above-ground drilling will only happen on school property that isn’t near the buildings.

“Did we have to settle for a little bit less money? Absolutely,” Quattrochi said. “But the safety of our students is top priority.”
