Ohio Could Replace School Ratings with Letter Grades

Today, Ohio schools receive one of six ratings from the state, labels like “Effective” or “Continuous Improvement.” But Ohio State Superintendent of Public Instruction Stan Heffner says that Ohio should start giving schools letter grades instead because they’re easier to understand.

(For the record, “Effective” is the equivalent of a “B.” “Continuous Improvement” is a “C.”)

I don’t think parents or a lot of people understand the current school rating system. We’re looking to go to letter grades, rather than indicators like effective or excellent. We want to translate it into something people can understand and want it to show measurements of more than one dimension — basically, an accountability system that is easier and more transparent, and most of all it would be useful for making good decisions within a district,” said Heffner.
