Gay Student in Viral Beating Video Gets $35,000 Settlement

Zach King, formerly Zach Huston, was cornered in a classroom and beaten up for being gay last fall when he was a freshman at Union-Scioto High School. His case gathered national attention when cell phone footage of the incident went viral, prompting advocates to get involved and demand that Ohio schools better protect LGBT students. His assailant was later sentenced to 90 days in juvenile prison, and now King has settled for $35,000 in a lawsuit against the school. King was represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio.

King and his mother, Rebecca Collins, claimed that school officials “fostered an atmosphere” that permitted the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender students while disregarding his reports of harassment.

The district admitted no wrongdoing in the agreement in which the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio represented King and his mother.
