Some Ohio Schools Brace For Funding Cuts After State Budget Veto

Some of Ohio's school districts are bracing for cuts in state funding in the new budget.

Kasich vetoed a provision in the new two year state budget that would have provided $78 million to about 100 school districts which had relied on a tangible personal property tax from local businesses. That tax was phased out about a decade ago but the state has been reimbursing schools so they wouldn't have to go to taxpayers for additional money.

School leaders, like Steve Moore of the Princeton District near Cincinnati, warned legislators that's what would happen if the state axed the reimbursement. "For us it will be a tax increase, that simply," Moore said earlier last month. The state reimbursements are eliminated only for the 2016-17 school year. In his veto message, Kasich said that will give schools that have been deemed wealthy enough time to raise money through property taxes.
