Teachers at Columbus Charter School Seek Union Vote

Teachers at a Columbus charter high school want to unionize--and the organizing effort is believed to be a first among the state's 387 charter schools.A group of teachers at Franklinton Preparatory Academy have taken steps to force an organizing vote. They got help from the Ohio Education Association, and the group's vice president, Scott DiMauro, said the charter teachers ‘are dissatisfied with working conditions.”“This is the only school at the moment that I’m aware of where we’ve essentially had a sizable group of the faculty or kind of a critical mass that have come to us,” said DiMauro.A union election could take place in seven weeks. A petition was filed with the National Labor Relations Board.School founder Martin Griffith declined comment on the possible vote.“We’re aware of the request and we can’t comment at this time,” said Griffith.Franklinton Preparatory Academy enrolls 135 students in grades 9 through 12.
