Your Education Guide to Election Day November 2013: Where to Vote and What’s on the Ballot

There are 194 school issues — nearly all tax issues — on the ballot for the Nov 5 general election. (There are also non-school related tax issues, local office elections and charter amendments on the ballot.)

That’s about as many school tax issues as were on the ballot in 2011, the last off-year election.

This year, about 60 percent of districts are basically asking voters to increase taxes by approving new taxes or replacing existing levies. The rest are asking voters to renew existing taxes. That’s roughly the same pattern we saw in 2011.

And, as in 2011, most districts on the ballot — about 70 percent this year — are asking voters to approve property tax levies. Others are asking voters to approve income taxes, taxes to fund bonds or a combination of different types of taxes.

Columbus, Ohio’s largest school district, is asking voters to approve a new tax levy. Columbus has a 9-mill levy on the ballot. If it passes, local tax bills would increase by 24 percent. And, for the first time in Columbus, part of the levy proceeds would go directly to charter schools. In the wake of the Columbus data-rigging scandal, Columbus is also asking voters to approve the creation of a new independent auditor.

If your local school district has a levy on the ballot, here’s how to vote.

Absentee Voting by Mail

If you want to vote by mail, you can request an absentee ballot from your county board of elections. The county board must receive your request by Saturday at noon. To cast an absentee ballot by mail, you must complete, sign and seal your completed ballot, and mail it back to your county board of elections. Ballots must be postmarked no later than Nov. 4. (You can also return your absentee ballot in person to your board of election before the polls close on Election Day, Nov. 5.)

Voting In-Person on Election Day

The polls are open 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Nov 5. On election day, you must cast your ballot in your precinct at your designated polling place. (You can find your polling place here.) Remember to bring proper form of ID.

Because the Lottery is not being used the way it was promised to be used in the 70′s. 100% of it should go to schools and relieve the tax payer of the excessive property taxes that are thrust on us. Plus, NO MORE tax abatements for businesses or corporations….that’s money that could also help our schools and make the property tax situation far more fair.

    • Kaz

That would be amazing. However, remember ed when some moron decided to challenge this years ago, and claim that it was unconstitutional? That’s why we no longer have the lottery money going to our schools.

    • Slaw76

Here’s a novel thought: why don’t parents pay for their own children to go to school instead of trying to make their neighbors pay for it?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ender-Wiggin/100000885624281 Ender Wiggin

here’s a novel thought, children not being morons is a benefit to society, not an entitlement. one day that kid could have his fingers inside your chest doing open heart surgery.

        • Slaw76

Whether or not a child is a moron has absolutely nothing to do with forcing other people to pay for the parents’ decision to bring a child into the word. Moreover, your snark is not a substitute for a substantive argument. Do you think that children won’t be educated absent an oppressive government forcing others pay for parents’ children? Could you be that stupid?

      • Frank

Because, douchebag, that’s not how it works.

I think we should get rid of loopholes for businesses because they go too far in helping them cheat. That being said, the premise behind giving breaks to businesses coming into the area or expanding is that there would be more taxes coming in because of the employees they hire. These employees will pay more taxes and spend more in the community than the businesses would be putting into the community with the taxes they pay. As more people come into the community, all areas benefit, retail, schools, Dr’s, hospitals….everyone. And businesses will have money to pay for their employees medical insurance so people don’t use emergency room….oops not if they change their policies. Obama lied….again!

Cleveland Heights-University Heights Voters: Don’t forget Issue 81. Vote AGAINST this bloated $157 MILLION plan for a 38 year tax increase, to pay for renovations at only three schools — while leaving all our other schools (including all seven elementary schools) to decay and deteriorate. Instead, they are ignored for the next 7-10 years, and they get NO MONEY WHATSOEVER, unless a future school board, in 2020 or 2023, puts another property tax on the ballot and it passes. Here’s a short video that gives you more detailed information: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfKHSV6g9rU

The NEA teacher’s union gets the school levy windfall (National Education Ass. – http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/printgroupProfile.asp?grpid=7428), which they then use to bribe or threaten the Democrats with to get their policies passed. School levies art blatant robbery, especially for those of us who have NO kids. And don’t give me the “they’re our future” garbage. I personally don’t want any Democrat-indoctrinated public school students running for any future office. They aren’t my future.

    • cathecticcathartic

Wow, you just went full retard. Never go full retard.

    • M Jordan

I absolutely agree. It’s time every government-run organization stopped thinking that when they are inefficient, we’ll just cough up more tax money. I don’t get to do that at home, and frankly, I’m tapped out. Trim the fat; tell the unions to stop donating to Democrat candidates; lower the union dues to help the teachers with something that will actually do them some good.
