Downloads of Apple’s new mobile operating system caused a statewide Internet slowdown at Ohio colleges this week.

Incoming Internet traffic on OARnet, the Internet service provider for Ohio public colleges and universities, spiked to about 85 percent of capacity Wednesday, compared to about 60 percent on a normal day, according to OARnet officials.

OARnet serves tens of thousands of students and staff at schools across Ohio.

The spike was the result of a large number of Apple iOS 7 download requests, OARnet Chief Technology Officer Paul Schopis said. iOS 7 is a major redesign of Apple’s mobile operating system.

At Ohio University, officials sent a university-wide email Wednesday asking people to delay downloading the new software, the Ohio University Post reports.

Business Insider reports that colleges in other states also saw Internet slowdowns Wednesday.

The volume of tweets about iOS 7 also peaked Wednesday night at about 500,000 per hour, about the same level as royal baby tweets when the Duchess of Cambridge went into labor, Mashable observes.

The Internet slowdown for Ohio colleges Wednesday lasted for less than an hour, Schopis said. Downloads may have taken two to three times as long as usual.

Once OARnet engineers recognized the issue, they adjusted the network routers handling incoming traffic, which returned users to normal download speeds, Schopis said.

iOS7 is a 667MB file – having thousands of people download it at the same time would put a strain on anybody’s network. Apple’s configurator tool can be used by organizations that centrally manage their iOS platforms to download the file one time and upgrade their devices locally over the LAN.
