Week Ahead: A Jam-Packed Week of District State Takeovers and School Funding Plans

Here’s what’s on our calendar this week:

Monday: State schools chief Richard Ross will be in northeast Ohio to officially form the state commission to take over the struggling Lorain school district and to make some sort of “announcement” regarding the Cleveland school district’s request not to be taken over. (If you’re into tea leaves, the Cleveland press conference also features Cleveland school district CEO Eric Gordon and Cleveland’s mayor.)

Monday: #ohedchat takes on the topic of professional development in schools. It happens at 9 p.m. on Twitter under the hashtag #ohedchat. (Have you registered for the #ohedchat Tweetup in June?)

Tuesday: State Board of Education set to vote on new rules on seclusion and restraint in schools and on endorsing Gov. John Kasich’s school funding plan. And speaking of  school funding…

Tuesday: Ohio lawmakers are set to reveal their plan for funding Ohio schools, which is likely to be different from Kasich’s. Hearings to follow. (Oh, and there’s that whole higher ed budget too, which hasn’t been quite as contentious as the K-12 one.)

Wednesday: Last month, the board for the pension fund that serves non-teaching school employees declined to cancel an $11,000 trip to a conference in Hawaii. The pension board’s travel policy is one of the topics the Ohio Retirement Study Council is set to discuss at its meeting Wednesday.

Wednesday: The Columbus Education Commission is scheduled to talk about what exactly will be in its report on how to improve Columbus schools. Also, charter-school superstar and co-founder of the KIPP charter schools Mike Feinberg will talk.

Thursday: Have you seen Reject, that documentary about bullying, social exclusion and general meanness in schools? Come see it Thursday and the Cleveland International Film Festival where I’ll be moderating a panel discussion after the film screening.

Friday: How about Harvest of Empire, that documentary that explains the role U.S. overseas intervention has played in getting people to want to move to America? If you come see it Friday at the  Cleveland International Film Festival, you can join in a panel discussion moderated by my colleague Ida.

Phew. What else?
