Week Ahead: State Board Interviews Candidates for State Superintendent

Monday: Finalists interview for the post of state superintendent. The four finalists include Kasich education advisor Dick Ross and current acting head of the Ohio Department of Education Michael Sawyers.

Tuesday: Hearings on K-12 and higher ed funding and budget policy continue in Columbus with testimony from charter school and school voucher groups, educational service centers, career/technical educators and others. Charter school groups have generally said nice things about Kasich’s proposed budget, even though it’s not yet clear what exactly it would do to their state funding. Hearings on school safety continue too.

Tuesday: The Education Law Society at Ohio State University holds a panel discussion on bullying in schools. (I’ll be one of the panelists.)

Thursday: The Columbus Education Commission, a group appointed by the city’s mayor to recommendations about improving the city’s schools, holds its last scheduled public forum.

Saturday: The Ohio Education Association holds its winter leadership conference to talk about issues including organizing against “Right to Work” intiatives, fundraising and influencing local elections.

Saturday: Ohio teachers gather for free-of-charge, free-flowing professional development at EdCamp Columbus.

Reminder: Ohio educators hold a weekly Twitter chat Mondays at 9 p.m. under the hashtag #ohedchat. This week’s topic is the new online PARCC tests coming to Ohio schools.
