Liberal Groups Call for School Board President’s Resignation Over Facebook Post

Ohio Department of Education

Debe Terhar is president of the state Board of Education.

State Board of Education President Debe Terhar is taking heat for a post on her personal Facebook page.

Terhar shared a picture of Adolf Hitler along with a misattributed quote that says: “Never forget what this tyrant said, ‘to conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.’”

The item came from a conservative page critical of President Obama’s gun control proposals.

Now some liberal groups are calling for Terhar’s resignation.

Terhar released a statement, saying:

“I did not compare our President to Adolph Hitler. Like millions of Facebook users, I simply shared a photograph on Facebook posted by another person. I regret the consequences of carelessly sharing that picture and I will be more selective in my use of social media in the future. I am committed to improving the quality of education for Ohio’s children and will continue to work tirelessly to achieve that goal.”

But not everyone is buying that defense.

“She has no business being on the state board of education when she trolls racist right wing websites and extracts quotes that first aren’t even true and then also compare the president of the United States with Adolf Hitler,” says Dale Butland of the liberal think-tank Innovation Ohio.

Innovation Ohio and the Ohio Democratic Party have both called for Terhar’s resignation because of the Facebook post.

Ohio School Board member Deborah Cain did not call for Terhar’s resignation, but says she did not like the Hitler reference.

“I was disappointed someone in her position would feel the need to reference someone like Hitler when she is discussing a policy that is first of all very volatile for people right now,” Cain says. “We need to have an open dialogue on this, and to use somebody that is quite a despicable character is a shame.”

Terhar has since deleted her facebook account.

This person must go! It’s a never ending series of unethical, offensive and misuse of tax dollars when the State Board of Ed and the ODE are involved.

  • Terhar must go!

I’m ready to sign the petition to ask for her resignation. There needs to be an end to these vile comments or “jokes” about the President. Sick and ignorant.

Every part of Ms Terhar’s statement is false. Hitler did not say it and Hitler armed citizens, not disarmed. Her tenet of armed citizens is the basis of fascist and bolshevik ideology. I wonder where she received her education? Does she belong to neo-nazi movement? Ms Terhar has a total disregard for democratic process. She should resign or take remedial course in the 20th century european history. Also, why did she take down her FB? Why didn’t she take that opportunity to stand by her convictions, however misguided they are?

“History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.”

Debe you are a disgrace to our state and ,regardlessof who the president is, you should show respect! Not only should you resign but you should have your teaching degree revoked.you are a poor role model and i hope that you resign or are removed. No wonder education in ohio stinks with ignorant people like you holding authority.

Folks, keep in mind, Hitler did NOT say this–there is no source for this. It’s something the gun nuts made up: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/disarm.asp

No, what Hitler said is the following, the “quote” she posted is a close paraphrase:

“History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to
carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.”

      — Adolf Hitler, April 1942

Such total disrespect and unprofessionalism. She needs to go!

Obviously, this is a person who does not think. Does she not know (especially someone in her position) that this is a crucial issue involving our schools? She has damaged the credibility of the position as President of Ohio’s school board. It’s zero. She exposed her ignorance on Facebook. She has to go..

Ms. Terhar should be trying to find ways to keep our school children safe instead of making comments that incite.

What she does in her private life, including PRIVATE posts to her social media accounts is none of our business and does not indicate that she isn’t trying to find ways to protect the children. If she is guilty of anything, it is first, choosing who she picks as a friend on FaceBook (since obviously one of her “friends” decided to make her private post public); and secondly, failing to investigate the other content on a website from which she chose to post a picture. Last I checked, neither are grounds for dismissal.

A person in charge of education, who doesn`t know left from right. Probably a person who didn`t have Civics in their own educational portfolio. The same kind of fraud, who uses education to promote their own political agenda.

ANN RANDISTAN…. That fertile void between the ears of the NeoNutzi`s. A place where the only limits on an imagination are those imposed by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

“History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to
carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.” — Adolf Hitler, April 1942

Although paraphrased in her post, Adolf Hitler DID indeed voice the sentiments that Ms Terhar posted (privately, I might add).
