If you’re interested in talking with other people who care about Ohio students, you should put this date on your calendar: Jan. 28.

That’s when the first Ohio education Twitter chat starts.

Q: What’s a Twitter chat?

A: It’s a chance for people who are really interested in a topic to get together online and talk about it. Basically, it’s a way for people to learn from each other.

Possible topics include school funding, new teacher evaluations, online tests, the new Common Core curriculum and so much more.

There are dozens of other education chats on Twitter already, but this one is focused on issues of special interest to Ohioans.

Q: How do I join in?

A: When it’s time for the chat, log on to Twitter.

Search for the hashtag #ohedchat. Click on view “all” tweets. (You can also set up an #ohedchat column in Hootsuite, TweetDeck or your Twitter client of choice.)

The moderators will kick things off with a question or topic, and then it’s your turn to weigh in. See a question you can answer? Jump in and share your thoughts. Have a question for others? Ask away.

During the chat, everyone who’s participating in the chat adds #ohedchat to their tweets.

Q: How do I know what time the chat starts and what the first topics will be?

The chat starts at 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28. The topic will be teacher evaluations and the new Ohio Teacher Evaluation System. If you have specific questions, you can send them to @ChristinaHank in advance. Or just join in Monday night.

A: It’s actually up to you. Take this survey to vote on #ohedchat time and topics.

Once the votes are in, we’ll update this post. Or you can just follow follow some of the people who helped kick off the chat and they’ll tweet out more info about the chat. They include (but certainly are not limited to!): @JR_evans@ChristinaHank, @Ronbrogers, @mdroush, @DrJoeClark, @FinEdChat and me (@M_Bloom).

Q: What if I can’t make the chat?

A: We’ll post chat summaries online.

Q: What if I’m not on Twitter?

A: You can still listen in. On Jan. 28, you’ll be able to click here and watch the chat as it happens.
