Barbara Snyder is president of Case Western Reserve University.

Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee made $1.9 million last year, making him the best-paid public-college president in the country. His peers in Ohio’s private colleges and universities don’t come close to that standing.

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s annual survey of private-college president compensation released this week ranks Case Western Reserve University President Barbara Snyder as the best-paid private-college president in Ohio.

Snyder’s total 2010 compensation of $730,056 puts her compensation below the average presidential pay at what the Chronicle considers similar schools. Those schools include Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Brandeis University.

Nationwide, Snyder is the 68th best compensated private-college president.

The Chronicle says many private-college presidents occupy a “rarefied financial position.” Private-college presidents saw their average pay rise by about 3 percent from 2009 to 2010 and receive perks that corporate business leaders have given up in the face of shareholder criticism, the Chronicle reports.

The Chronicle’s data is drawn from public Internal Revenue Service filings and takes into account base salary as well as bonuses and other payments.

On the list of best-compensated Ohio private-school presidents, Snyder is followed by the University of Dayton’s Daniel Curran ($669,405) and the College of Wooster’s Grant Cornwell ($633,430).

Here’s how Ohio’s best-paid public and private university presidents compare.
